FAO Schwarz

The oldest toy store in America is not a destination I ever expected to visit, but it’s worth going just for the entertainment. Throughout FAO Schwarz there are staff posing as magicians and super heroes or simply as toy aficionados, and they make everything look amazing. There were giant fish swimming through the air, aerodynamic planes that returned to your hand no matter which direction you threw them, and – my favorite – magic lights that appeared and disappeared as you pinched your finger & thumb together. Everyone seemed so happy – which could have been the pure joy of toys – or maybe it was because people really do have gummy bears for breakfast…!

Bowls in Central Park

The end-of-season party is in full swing as I write, but I did get to enjoy watching a few rolls of the final game in Central Park on the weekend. The style of the game varies from the one my father enjoys – for example, there are 16 ends as opposed to 21 in Australia. But the biggest difference was in the green itself, where balding patches and falling leaves would have created many excuse-ridden deliveries. Not that anyone seemed too fussed, as it’s a very casual caper. Visitors are welcome, you can play your first year with borrowed bowls, and you can receive free lessons at the end of the summer. Looks like a good opportunity for me to polish up my swing before I hit the perfection of the Kirton Point Bowling Club when I next head home…

Indian Summer

The weekend in NYC was one of those great to be alive weekends with temperatures in the upper twenties and people pouring into the Parks to enjoy the last days of Summer. We spent the whole day in Central park, catching the swinging ( seventies ) skaters, listening to music, dodging volley balls and frisbees, and then topping it off with a magnificent sunset…

Wall Street Occupation

This is definitely not a tea party – although when I went to investigate the occupation last Wednesday, the atmosphere was definitely very festive. The occupation had already been in play for a few weeks, and because of various reports I expected to find more feral than friendly tenants. But going downtown in the late afternoon I was joined by throngs of workers, families and regular people. There were grandmas and war veterans and musicians, not to mention press from all around the world. It was great to see such motivation. I kept thinking about Peter Finch in the film ‘Network’ and how people were just wanting to have their say. In the past week many church groups have added their voice to the 99%, while the Police Commissioner says the City has spent in excess of $2M in police overtime and will see the situation to the end. So with (only) 13 months until the next election, it will be interesting to see what happens next…

Steve Jobs

The windows of the apple stores in Manhattan are covered with thousands of messages marking the death of Steve Jobs on October 5th. With many others on the weekend, we paused to read and reflect on his amazing life…

Ping Pong

Ping Pong is still the rage here, and a chance encounter with ( our ) table’s designer in Tompkins Square Park on the weekend gave news that two new table/sculptures are about to be installed in Riverside Park. Another is ordered for Sydney in 2012, so best polish up on your game in readiness. In fact it doesn’t end there. The Standard Hotel, a trendy addition to the West Village and an architectural feat being built over the Hi-Line, has a couple of regular tables in their beer garden. Looks like pool tables are out and ping pong is in. But someone will have to come up with a replacement tag for ‘pool shark’, ping pong shark just doesn’t seem to cut it!

Gabby goes Global

For the past three and a half weeks I have been gadding about with Leanne and Gabby the Guide Dog. It has been memorable for many reasons, not least of which has been to share the experience of Gabby. She was an essential member of our party, and at times was the party. Gabby has been with Leanne for 6 years and is used to long walks and gourmet destinations. Maybe that’s why she took to New York so well. Within a day she could take Leanne to Lindt on 5th Avenue or to Grom Ice cream on Broadway without hesitation. She was unfazed by the craziness of the crowds and the traffic, helping to choose toys for the boys in the Disney Store in Times Square, and trying on the latest canine coats at ‘Pets on Lex’ on the Upper East Side. Gabby was unfailingly cheerful and always the total professional. When she wore her harness she was on the job, but when we got to Maine, she was on holidays!

Waiting for Andrea…..

The road to Maine

To give our Australian party the best chance of finding some autumn colour on the trip to Maine, I planned our route to go directly north from NYC through the Berkshires and then across to the coast. This meant we would travel through 5 states on the way up ( New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire & Maine ) and then come back via the coast road. It was a glorious journey and we found not only the beginnings of red and orange leaves, but beautiful New England countryside complete with covered bridges, picture perfect wooden houses and pumpkin fetes. Kennebunkport was our destination, and what a spectacular spot, right on the ocean. Fisherman pulled into the port with their catch and we indulged in the soft shelled lobster au natural in an equally natural wooden hut. But by far the most delicious seafood meal (since Port Lincoln) was the one I had at the Ramp Bar & Grill. Grilled salmon, prawns and scallops on mashed potato with a red capsicum coulis…..

Gospel music and food for the soul

Last weekend we dressed in our Sunday best and headed to Harlem anticipating a morning of gospel music, fabulous outfits and inspirational words from the pulpit. The Baptist Church in Convent Street on 145th is the place I usually recommend for a warm welcome – which we received, but it also came with a warning that the service was a special one and would take at least 3 hours. It would be rude to leave before the service finished, and we knew we couldn’t last 3 hours, so we jumped in a cab and headed for the famous Abyssinian Church on 138th. I was lucky enough to attend the 100th anniversary of the church in 2008, when Wynton Marsalis led his jazz orchestra and 150 gospel singers in a performance especially written for the occasion. It was amazing. But these days the Church is so famous you have to queue to get a seat. In fact there is a special entrance for visitors, and we were told on the day that if you want to attend the 11 o’clock service you have to start queuing at 8am… There were easily 1,000 people in the queue – it stretched for at least 2 blocks. So we followed the Usher’s instruction to seek out other churches – first one block south ( no gospel singing that day ), then two blocks north ( no visitors allowed) and finally one block west where we didn’t get past the front door.

So having tried five churches without success, we decided the only sensible thing to do was to have breakfast! So we found another cab and went downtown to Frankies in the East Village. I am happy to report there was a table waiting, the coffee was strong, and they still make the best french toast in the city….

Ciao Bella in the Bronx

Little Italy in Manhattan is seeing something of a renaissance after years of losing position to Chinatown. ( Watch this space. ) But if you want to experience classic Italian America, as it has existed for the past 3 generations, go out to Arthur Street in the Bronx. There the same families are still making pasta by hand, filling cannoli’s to order, cheerfully handing out samples of fabulous cheese and prosciutto, and serving the best coffee outside of Lucia’s in the Adelaide Central Market. It’s really worth the trip, so take a big bag and be prepared to be talked into the nougat…
